I posted what too much caffeine does to me in the energy drink forum last June, but I'm having another bad "trip" and I wanted to repost the side effects. Too much caffeine gets me wound up, but not in the good alert way. It's more like an extreme jittery case where my heart starts pounding and I'm a little scared for my life.
The problem is, I didn't think I had had too much until it was too late (actually, this time I think it was a sugar/caffeine mix that did me in).
My question is this: does this happen to anyone else? If so, what do you do to bring yourself back down? Should I just let time wear it off, or maybe some Sleepytime tea or maybe some milk or something might help? I took a shower and that seemed to help a little, but I'm wanting to get back to normal as quick as possible. It's nothing so serious where I think I should call an ambulance or anything like that, but it is a little unnerving to be so wired.

One time I had too much caffeine and I didn't like the feeling. I was super sleepy and had a 12 hour shift at the hospital, so silly me went to Starbucks and got triple shots in my coffee. Well 30-40 minutes later, I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. My heart was beating soooo fast and loud like I just had a strenuous workout when all I was doing was standing still. It went away after about an hour or two. I think drinking a lot of water helps, it flushes out your system when you have to pee a lot.
Becky, when I feel like that (I once drank four REALLY BIG coffees in a just a couple of hours ... like half a gallon!), I find it best to drink A LOT of water. It seems to help ... ahem ... flush the caffeine out of your system.

Becky I get the same problem! Actually, I can't drink caffeinated coffee because of it, which is why I stick to tea. From my experience, if you're a high-energy person in general by nature, you may have a tendency to be caffeine-sensitive. Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions on what to do to speed up the recovery other than wait. It should go away in a few hours. Hope you feel better.
I am reallllly sensitive to caffeine. I can only have it in the mornings or else I can't sleep at night. And even in the mornings, I usually skip it or else have only tea or cola or half a cup of regular coffee.
Dark chocolate has a fair amount of caffeine, unfortunately. I say "unfortunately" because it's actually quite a healthy "dessert," relatively speaking, but I don't like to have much of it after dinner because of the caffeine content.
im trying not to overcaffeine, in the past in my 20s, i used to drink at least 4 cups a day, now im down to 1 and 1/2. im not a water fan, unless its a really good bottled water, and i drink caffeine free diet soda.

I have been able to pretty much give up pop. I don't know how, but I just drink water or some natural tea now. It really makes me feel a lot better, however I've never been very sensetive to caffine. Coffee makes me feel nauseous, so that's never been a problem for me, but I understand how some people can get affected very easily.

I find eating something and drinking lots of water helps. I'm really sensitive to caffeine!!! I can only have two diet mtn dews a day (bad habit) and it has to be in the morning. If I drink any more than that I won't be able to sleep at night. Coffee gives me a tummy ache and can be too potent!!!! I'll drink it sometimes like at starbucks but that's if I have a VERY full stomach and I haven't had anything else with caffeine in it.
Becky, I'm sure you feel better now but ICK!!! I'm sorry that happened last night!!
Thanks for the sympathy and advice, ladies. I do feel much better now and will try to remember that I'm not 14 anymore.
This whole caffeine sensitivity thing is new to me. When I WAS 14, I recall drinking thirteen cups of coffee in a row and it not "hurting" me. I was up allll night, though!

I guess I'm the only one who isn't sensitive to caffeine. I like my Cherry Coke & really don't do coffee drinks except on an occasional basis. I've actually ended up having a tipsy feeling after having a few Cherry Cokes before. I don't mind that feeling at all.
I don't get wired up from caffeine, but I do try to avoid it because caffeine is a diuretic (sp?) it takes water out of your body which can make you very constipated. I read that for every cup of caffeinated drink you have you need to drink two cups of water to make up for the loss. Caffeine free sodas, tea and coffee are usually what I have. That may help you too.
My ex-SO could drink three cups of STRONG coffee right before bed and still sleep like a baby (except when he had to get up to pee because of all that coffee ). If I so much as LOOK at a cup of regular coffee in the afternoon, I am doomed to getting almost no sleep that night. It's interesting how people's bodies can react so differently to things.
My boyfriend is addicted to caffeine, specifically Mountain Dew. He drinks about three cans a day, and if he tries to stop, he gets massive headaches. I try to avoid caffiene entirely, except for green and black teas. I only drink coffee about once or twice a month, and it's always something fancy like a cafe mocha. I hate plain coffee.
Nothing ever happens to me when i drink caffine although i dont drink much. my main diet for drinks is.....
sprite( no caffine) reg. tea, green tea, various tea house teas "vanilla, hibiscus, peach and much more fruit juice "cranberry, lemon, apple, much more too choco milk, shakes, egg nog
If I have regular hot coffee with cream and sugar I can get VERY shakey. It also hurts my stomach, so I very rarely ever drink it.
I'm more into iced coffees, which aren't as harsh on my stomach for some reason. I recently tried the Vanilla iced coffee from McDonald's and I must say, I LOVED IT!
I know it sounds crazy, but I really did like it! I was afraid it was going to be watery without much flavor, but it was actually very good.
I've had an iced coffees and iced lattes from Dunkin Donuts, which were ok, but not as sweet as I like it. Plus McDonald's is cheaper!

Caffeine overdose can be a very serious problem. I nearly overdosed on caffeine pills and mints during my sophomore year of college, and it was NOT FUN.
