I figured we could start our "own little book club" or even, for some who are interested, our own "paperback book swap" if you will Yes.

1. If you've read any good books lately (absolutely anything you think is worth mentioning), then please let us know.
I am personally a HUGE book worm and could do with a few recommendations Yes.
I've read all the classics (or the majority of them anyway) and am into many other genres (try me).

So please, recommend away Flower.

2. Aside from swapping delicious bath and body goodies, if anyone is interested, I thought I would introduce the whole "paperback book swap" concept.
Where you swap books you don't want for books that someone else has that might be of interest to you (???). Just a thought idunno.

But anyway...read any good books lately Flower?

Big bookworm here too. *raises hand* Big Grin

I just finished "Devil in the White City." I really enjoyed it. While the crime parts were disturbing (this is a nonfiction book), they were interesting, and I really enjoyed reading the sections about the Chicago World's Fair. Smiler

Off the top of my head, here are some other good ones I've read recently (all nonfiction):

-The Glass Castle
-A Strange Piece of Paradise
-The Leopard Hat

I mostly prefer nonfiction, but if a novel is particularly good, I'll read it. Smiler

If any of you are into poetry, here's a couple of my favorites:

* Aside from "She Walks in Beauty" by Lord Byron, the next two are favorites Yes Love!!!

"Atalanta in Calydon", 1865.
"Before the beginning of years
There came to the making of man
Time, with a gift of tears;
Grief, with a glass that ran;
Pleasure, with pain for leaven;
Summer, with flowers that fell;
Remembrance, fallen from heaven,
And madness risen from hell;
Strength without hands to smite;
Love that endures for a breath;
Night, the shadow of light,
And Life, the shadow of death."

~ Algernon Charles Swinburne

Title Unknown.
"Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
and things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art; to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul."

~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

When it comes to books, I tend to like brain candy. Big Grin Basically that means chick lit, although there are some more intellectual choices from contemporary Latina authors that I like.

My List Of Interesting Books:
"Confessions Of A Shopaholic" series & "Can You Keep A Secret?" (Sophie Kinsella)
"The Devil Wears Prada" & "Everyone Worth Knowing" (Lauren Weisberger)
"The Dirty Girls Social Club" & "Playing With Boys" (Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez)
"The History Of The Pink Carnation" & "The Masque Of The Black Tulip" (Lauren Willig)
"Like Water For Chocolate" (Laura Esquivel)
"The House Of The Spirits" (Isabel Allende)

There are some books from the above authors that I am interested in reading. I'm definitely looking forward to the 5th book in the Shopaholic series & the 3rd book in Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series, "The Deception Of The Emerald Ring". Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez released a new novel this yr. called "Make Him Look Good". I haven't gotten around to reading that yet, but hope to eventually.

I second The DaVinci Code, The Kite Runner, The Jungle, Little Women, Their Eyes Were Watching God, anything by Poe, and the Shopaholic series. Big Grin

Also, one of my absolute favorite classic books is The Grapes of Wrath.

As for other fiction books, I love the books by John Irving (especially A Prayer for Owen Meany & The World According to Garp).

Oh - another fiction book I read recently & really liked (even though the writing was sometimes a bit melodramatic for my tastes) was The Memory Keeper's Daughter. The premise is very interesting. Smiler

Oh - I can't fail to mention one of my all-time favorite nonfiction books - "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer. It's a masterpiece of outdoor/adventure writing, imo, and it reads almost like a novel. His "Into The Wild" is wonderful, too. I think people would really enjoy these books even if they're not particularly interested in the wilderness or the outdoors. They are fascinating just as human interest stories. Seriously - I heartily recommend both of these books. Smiler

Jade, textbooks & magazines definitely do count. I'm always buying at least one magazine per month if not more. Big Grin Don't think catalogs would count as reading though. I wouldn't say that textbooks really count as pleasure reading. The only exception for me was during my sr. yr. in college when I was taking Latin American history. I really enjoyed reading those textbooks. I know, I am such a Spanish & history nerd.

I think it would be neat if we had one book selection that we could all read and discuss! Good idea! I'll try to think of some suggestions to post later.

Jade- Of course it counts flowers...if you've read it, we'd all love to hear what you think Yes. Besides...it's so cool to hear that someone else has a thing for reading medical journals. I like doing that too even though I am not in the medical profession.

You're a nurse? Thumbsup.

Miss V- It was a long thing coming winking and definitely DO share your fave book reads Yes!

I LOVE to read! I don't get to do it nearly enough lately! Anyway, some of my favorites have been:

Lovely Bones
Black and Blue
She's Come Undone
Drowning Ruth
Blues Dancing
Addicted
Single Mom

I'm open to many authors and genres. I'll read anything by John Grisham, E. Lynn Harris, or Eric Jerome Dickey.

I was actually thinking about ordering a few books to keep on the shelf. I hope I'll have time to read during the holidays. I do have Angels and Demons. Since it was mentioned here, I'll definitely give it a read soon. Smiler

I love biographies mostly. I usually get Hardcover Bios as gifts, because everyone knows that I like them. It doesn't matter what era either. I think I honestly have read, every single Presidents (and First Ladies) bio. I just recently read George Harrisons bio and am starting on a paperback on, of all people, Danny Bonaduce. Bonk It doesn't matter if they are a politician, celebrity, etc. I draw the line on any bio about Britney Spears, or Paris Hilton though! Wink

I am a fast reader(took a few speed reading courses) and can read a book in usually a day or two. Sometimes though, a book is so good that you don't want it to end so fast! Big Grin

Thanks to a swap I won from Megan, I recently got to read The Devil Wears Prada.

If there is a movie and a book, I always would rather read the book first.

The book that I just am starting to read is "Strong of Heart". Life and Death in the Fire Department of New York. It was written by Thomas Van Essen, NYC Thirtieth Fire Commissioner.

I still think that my favorite read of all time, would have to be the book "The Thorn Birds". I know that there was a series, but it doesn't compare to the book at all.

I am a guilty pleasure reader and I love VC Andrews novels.
Shhh

"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" is a great book. It'll take ya back to high school days with your girlfriends, and it's got a great story. The movie says pretty close to the book. That's the latest greatest book I've read. I tend to like young adult novels.
